Agile Roadmapping: An Adaptive Approach to Technology Foresight

Technology roadmapping has become an important foresight tool for science, technology, and innovation (STI) policy technology strategy development. There are, however, challenges in translating evidence from into the strategies of STI agencies planning research & development (RTD) organizations. While evaluation literature identifies methodological issues related to granularity, scope, stakeholder confidence, there is limited guidance on how ensure outputs are strategically relevant, appropriately detailed, credible. This paper highlights potential using structured visual frameworks anticipate strategic failures adaptive iterative nature processes address them. In this paper, we distinguish between: framework ‘canvas’; captured canvas; process generating evidence; any final plan developed that (with goals, milestones, actions, etc). We investigate efforts use canvas as a diagnostic explore emerging trajectories ‘pathways’. demonstrate key patterns distribution have reveal where further may need be gathered, or triangulation perspectives required. argue by adaptively addressing these at stages within (and re-scoping, re-prioritizing, re-focusing effort resources), coverage, consensus can greatly enhanced. conclude summarizing set novel principles agile roadmapping, reflecting implications more generally, outlining future agenda test refine approach foresight.
